The Letter from America is a unique open letter to the citizens, politicians, and regulators of the UK and the rest of the EU about the hazards of genetically modified crops.

This is relevant to all of us in the UK and the rest of Europe because our politicians and regulators are currently deciding whether or not to plant GMOs and, under pressure from biotech lobbyists and trade negotiations like the TAFTA/TTIP, whether to relax regulations around the import and sale of GMOs.

Europe has held out against GMOs for a very long time. If it gives in now, efforts in the US to successfully campaign against GMOs, to get GM foods labelled, and to try to get them out of the farming and food system are likely to collapse.

This is now an urgent international issue and we all need to work together – and quickly – to protect our global food system and ourselves.

The Letter from America, signed by groups and individuals representing nearly 57 million US citizens, gives us a glimpse into out for future should we choose to embrace GM crops.

Quotes from notable signers:

Susan Sarandon, Actress
We've had GMOs in the US for nearly 20 years. Instead of bringing certainty and security they have
raised more and more worrying questions about their effectiveness, their necessity, and even their
safety. Polls show that the majority of US citizens - and in fact citizens everywhere - either want
them labelled or taken out of the food system altogether. It's important to keep pressing our elected
representatives to act in accordance with this strong public mandate.”

American Academy of Environmental Medicine
“Several animal studies indicate serious health risks associated with GM food consumption including
infertility, immune dysregulation, accelerated aging, dysregulation of genes associated with
cholesterol synthesis, insulin regulation, cell signaling, and protein formation, and changes in the
liver, kidney, spleen and gastrointestinal system. The AAEM asks Physicians to consider the possible
role of GM foods in the disease processes of the patients they treat and to document any changes in
patient health when changing from GM food to non‐GM food.

The powerfully written and fully referenced letter details the problems and challenges that American farmers, consumers and others have faced over the nearly two decades since the first commercialised genetically engineered crops were planted.

I pray – please don’t cave into the pressures to allow GMOS to proliferate in the UK, and the rest of the EU. You’ll have nothing but regrets. Leave farming into the hands of your farmers, and not into the hands of several multinational, poison chemical companies. America has become the sickest of industrialized nations, yet we are continually kept in the dark about many things that should be just common sense to inform us on. Use us as your example of what not to follow. Don’t sign any trade deals that would compromise your sovereignty as nations, as that’s exactly what you’ll be relinquishing if you do. Also, don’t do it to help everyday Americans that are fighting this beast just to get GMOS labeled. God speed!
